Siegwerk, Enplater Collaborate on Recyclable Mono-PP Pouch Development

Siegwerk and Enplater Group have jointly developed a mono-material polypropylene (PP) pouch designed to deliver both recyclability and functional performance for flexible packaging applications.

The collaboration brings together Siegwerk’s expertise in inks and coatings with Enplater’s capabilities in flexible and rigid packaging production. The companies report that the resulting structure is intended to provide barrier and sealing performance comparable to multi-material packaging while supporting recyclability goals.

Development work included trials under production conditions to optimize the pouch structure for food packaging applications. The project reflects ongoing efforts across the packaging value chain to design materials aligned with circular economy initiatives and evolving regulatory requirements.

A key component of the solution is Siegwerk’s oxygen-barrier and white ink technology, applied inline to help replace traditional materials such as PVdC, metallized films and EVOH-based structures. The formulation is designed to simplify material structures while maintaining barrier functionality. The pouch also incorporates polyurethane-based ink systems intended to support print quality and adhesion in flexible packaging environments.

According to the companies, the mono-PP structure is designed to meet emerging Design for Recycling guidelines, including those associated with proposed European packaging regulations.

The project highlights the role of collaboration between material suppliers and converters in advancing packaging innovation, particularly as the industry works to balance performance requirements with sustainability objectives.
