The science of stick

Adhesion isn’t luck—it’s chemistry. Achieving consistent ink performance across substrates requires understanding what’s happening at the interface: surface energy and wetting, boundary layers, diffusion and anchoring, the role of polymers and resins, and how treatments and contaminants can make or break a bond.

In The Science of Stick, Bhushan Patil of Amcor will connect foundational surface chemistry to real-world flexographic outcomes. The session will explore how different substrate families (films, papers, foils, and coated structures) present different chemical and physical surfaces; how ink vehicles and additives influence wetting and interfacial interactions; and how drying/curing conditions impact final adhesion and durability. The webinar will also cover common adhesion failure modes—such as poor wet-out, weak boundary layers, and intercoat incompatibility—and the practical tests and controls that help diagnose root cause.

Ideal for: pressroom and quality teams, ink & substrate suppliers, process engineers, and anyone troubleshooting adhesion, rub, or delamination issues in flexible packaging and label applications.

Duration: 60 minutes (includes Q&A)

Learning objectives

Attendees will be able to:

  • Explain the core adhesion mechanisms relevant to flexo inks on packaging substrates
  • Relate surface energy/wetting to print quality and bond strength
  • Identify how treatments, additives, and contamination influence adhesion
  • Recognize typical failure modes and link symptoms to likely causes
  • Choose practical tests and process controls to improve repeatability

Speakers

Bhushan Patil

Bhushan Patil is a Principal Product Development Engineer in Core R&D at Amcor, where he leads research and innovation in inks, coatings, and adhesive technologies for flexible packaging applications. With more than 16 years of experience in the printing and packaging industry, his work focuses on formulation chemistry, polymer science, and process optimization across flexographic, gravure, UV/EB, and digital printing platforms. Bhushan’s research is centered on advancing sustainable packaging technologies, including recyclable multilayer packaging structures, and de-inking technologies that support circular economy goals. He serves as a subject matter expert on inks and coatings within Amcor’s global technical network. Prior to joining Amcor, Bhushan held technical roles at Fuji Seal International, where he worked extensively on shrink sleeve and pressure-sensitive label technologies. His work focused on developing ink systems and printing processes for both washable and retentive ink technologies. Bhushan is an inventor on multiple U.S. and international patent applications related to recyclable packaging films and lamination technologies. He holds a Master of Science in Paper and Printing Science from Western Michigan University and a Bachelor of Engineering in Printing and Graphics Communication from University of Pune, India.

Kenny Tucker

Kenny serves as the Director of Technical Education at the Flexographic Technical Association. Previously, he held the position of Assistant Director at Clemson University's Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics. A 2004 graduate of Clemson University with a bachelor's degree in Graphic Communications, Kenny began his career at Sealed Air Corporation, where he worked across various roles, including prepress, color management, inkjet and remote proofing, workflow automation, expanded gamut printing, press characterizations, and managing graphic technologies. He later joined Anderson & Vreeland as a Technology Specialist, focusing on the installation of plate-making equipment, RIP software, and inkjet proofing solutions. Before working for Clemson, Kenny worked as Production Manager at Frontier Label, now Sttark Labels, overseeing inventory procurement, label production, project management, and maintenance operations. In 2019, he returned to Clemson University, coordinating industry-focused projects, seminars, research initiatives, and training workshops. In his free time, Kenny enjoys fishing, camping, and spending quality time with his family.
