Survey Examines Smart Packaging Versus Sustainable Packaging
A recent survey conducted by RDD, a US-based provider of printing, packaging and marketing services for major brands, involved 400 executives and managers in packaging, labeling and supply chain sectors. The RDD 2026 Integrated Packaging Report highlighted a significant gap between companies’ intentions and the full adoption of smart packaging.
Though the survey noted a high degree of awareness of smart packaging solutions, 84% of respondents indicated they have not yet implemented connected packing components or data-driven logistics systems. While most respondents indicated an intention to adopt smart packaging over the next three years—integrating such technologies as RFID tags, QR codes and other lotT-enabled tools—only a small portion have already begun implementation.
The report also looked at the impact of artificial intelligence, e-commerce, environmental regulations and the complexity of IT systems and other corporate infrastructure which make act as barriers to adoption of smart packaging.
The report also emphasizes that sustainability is not just a general goal but a fundamental criterion in business decisions, influencing both product design and the selection of material suppliers. Internal sustainability objectives were cited as the main driver for packaging changes by 74% of managers, while nearly half expect sustainability and environmental regulations to influence operations over the next three years.
