Expanding the Toolbox for Sustainable Packaging

BASF is a leading, global chemical company and offers a comprehensive portfolio of raw materials for sustainable packaging, including water-borne dispersions for functional packaging coatings such as water and grease barriers as well as heat-seal lacquers.

In their talk, Joshua Kempfer, Technical Specialist, and Hares Wahdat, Technical Marketing and New Business Development, will provide technical insight into BASF’s water-borne heat-seal lacquer portfolio and introduce a new product, Joncryl HSL 9014, a water-borne heat-seal lacquer with low-heat seal initiation temperature by presenting results on flexo-applied coatings on aluminum and paper substrates.

Josh Kempfer, BASF

Josh Kempfer, technical specialist at BASF, helps further customer formulations with his extensive product and application insight. Josh leverages broad production and application experience to enable the industry to get the most out of the leading portfolio of BASF resin and additive products for use in printing inks and coatings. Josh is often the first point of contact for customer or end-user questions and application concerns; this visibility has provided him with further insight into the details of printing processes, formulations, and common operating issues.

When he’s not creating chemistry with customers, Josh is focused on furthering innovative solutions for flexible packaging and heat seal lacquer applications. Josh’s technical expertise began with his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan and has grown over the last nine years as he has gained diverse experience in chemical production and end-use applications.

Hares Wahdat, BASF

Since October 2021, Hares Wahdat is a scientist for technical marketing and new business development at the Printing & Packaging unit of BASF NA. In his role, Hares develops new products to further expand BASF’s portfolio for raw materials for sustainable packaging with applications ranging from barrier coatings to heat-seal lacquers.

Furthermore, Hares is responsible for consulting customers on how to use BASF’s products at different parts of the packaging value chain. Hares Wahdat holds a Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry from Clausthal University of Technology, a school located in the highland region of Northern Germany. He pursued further research as a postdoctoral researcher at the prestigious Polymer Science & Engineering Department at UMass Amherst.
