“My Flexo Journey” Stories with Kiersten Borden

From her first role in prepress to her newest chapter in sales, Kiersten Borden’s flexo career has been shaped by continuous growth, meaningful connections, and commitment to learning. Now seven years into the industry – and stepping into two exciting new roles this month with XSYS and Women of Flexo – Kiersten reflects on the path that’s brought her here and the people and experiences that have made it all worthwhile.

This July marks my seventh year working professionally in Flexo. After graduating from the Graphic Communications program at Clemson University, I made my first big jump, moving 17 hours from home to start my first job in the industry in July of 2018. I started out as a Graphics Account Specialist for a flexible packaging printer. The job was a fantastic blend of graphics prepress, project management, and customer service, giving me a solid foundation in building different valuable skills. I eventually moved into a lead position, which granted me the chance to help build and train a team of graphic account specialists and spend more time press side for approvals. Reflecting back, this job was an essential part of my career development. I had the opportunity to learn the ins-and-outs of flexo printing production, how to be a strong partner to my customers, and navigate being a leader for my team members.

However, after three years I was ready for a new challenge and wanted to explore a different side of the industry. In July of 2021, I accepted a new job opportunity to work with my current company, XSYS. This move has given me the chance to see the industry from a larger lens outside of the production plant. I’ve explored different facets of sales and marketing. I’ve gained a more in-depth understanding of printing plates, platemaking and printing applications. And I have especially enjoyed some of the travel I’ve been fortunate enough to experience.

With XSYS, I have had the opportunity to be more involved with industry associations, the FTA being a highlight. Through this involvement, I have been able to make many connections and build my professional network. I have also been able to explore other passions in the industry, such as my time with Women of Flexo. I been involved for three years now and I’ve been able to pursue leadership roles, speaking opportunities, mentor and connect with the truly inspiring women in our industry. Still being newer to the industry, these experiences have been invaluable for me.

Now funny enough, this July also brings some exciting changes once again. I am officially moving into a new role with XSYS as Sales Account Manager for the Southeast. I am thrilled to take this next step and continue to move forward in the industry. This month I have also moved into Co-Chair for the Women of Flexo. Easy to say, it’s been a busy month.

Seven years in flexo has been an exciting journey!
