Online Instructor-Led Training: Flexographic Fundamentals

Learn the essentials of the flexographic printing process, markets served, types of presses used and how the presses work, in “Flexographic Fundamentals.”

This instructor-led course consists of three classes taught by FTA Director of Education Joe Tuccitto.

All classes are 90 minutes in length and taught in FTA’s Virtual Conference Center. Those who attend all three classes will receive a certificate of completion.

Flexographic Markets and the Presses Used
November 8, 10 a.m. ET

Flexography is all around us and most of the time we don’t even realize it. As you make your way through the grocery store, you see packaging that keeps food fresh, packaging that interacts with you as you walk by and, for some reason, packaging that just ends up in your cart.

Throughout this instructor-led online class, we will examine the types of packaging produced flexographically and the press types used.

After completing this class, you will be able to:

  • Interpret what flexible packaging is and how it is printed
  • Describe tags and labels and how they are printed
  • Explain what postprint and preprint corrugated are and how they are printed
  • Differentiate between wide web, narrow web, corrugated and specialty flexographic presses

How Does Flexography Work?
November 15, 10 a.m. ET

Flexography differs significantly from other print process as it is a direct relief rotary application. It uses printing plates with a raised image along with a unique inking application that allows for printing on virtually any type of substrate.

Throughout this instructor-led online class, we will discuss the printing application along with the other primary components of the flexographic press.

After completing this class, you will be able to:

  • Identify the functionality of the flexographic print station
  • Describe the anilox roller and its ink transfer characteristics
  • Describe the infeed, print section and outfeed sections of the various flexographic presses
  • Differentiate between what flexographic presses print roll-to-roll, roll-to-sheet and sheet-to-sheet

Essential Functional Elements of Flexography
November 22, 10 a.m. ET

Beyond the press itself, there are many essential functional elements that contribute to the flexographic application. From the inks, to the substrates, to the printing plates and everything in-between, this class will pull it all together to introduce attendees to the consumables used.

Throughout this instructor-led online class, we will discuss the primary consumables that are used in the everyday flexographic application.

After completing this class, you will be able to:

  • Identify the types of inks used throughout the industry and their functional properties
  • Describe the types of printing plates used and how they are produced
  • Differentiate between the different types of substrates commonly used throughout the industry
