SUMMARY:FIRST Friday Episode #15: Coatings and Applications
DESCRIPTION:Coatings play an increasingly important role in flexible packaging\, influencing everything from appearance and performance to product protection and package functionality. But selecting the right coating is only part of the equation—successful results also depend on understanding the application\, converting process and interaction between materials. \n\nSpeakers:\nJay Downey \nJay Downey is a Product Manager at Sun Chemical\, responsible for laminating adhesives and coatings for the flexible packaging market. With 37 years of experience in the flexible packaging industry\, he has served 27 years on the converting side and the last 10 years on the supply side. Over the last 10 years he has spearheaded cumulative growth in lamination adhesives\, aesthetic coatings and barrier coatings. Previously he held senior leadership positions where he built high performing technical\, operational and customer teams from the ground up. He is recognized as a leader in the flexible packaging industry as an application expert of lamination adhesives and coatings. His passion\, knowledge and understanding of the industry\, applications\, operations\, products\, processes and techniques is exceptional. He is always one to look outside the box and has an uncanny ability to come up with solutions where others could not. He holds a bachelor’s degree in education from UW-Stevens Point and a bachelor’s degree in business management from UW-Superior. \n  \n

SUMMARY:CIELAB at 50: How we put a number on color
DESCRIPTION:In 1976\, America celebrated its bicentennial—and the color science community introduced something that would have an enormous impact on how industries communicate and control color: CIELAB. \nFifty years later\, L*a*b* values and ∆E are part of the everyday language of print and packaging. But where did those numbers come from\, and how closely do they actually represent the way humans see color? \nJoin color scientist John Seymour for a journey through the history of color measurement\, beginning with the early experiments of Maxwell and Helmholtz\, the development of RGB color matching\, and the experiments that eventually produced the CIE standard observer and XYZ tristimulus values. From there\, we’ll explore the work that led to the creation of CIELAB in 1976 and the continued development of color-difference formulas such as CIEDE2000. \nAs CIELAB celebrates its 50th birthday\, this conversation will look not only at how modern colorimetry got here\, but also at what advances in our understanding of human vision could mean for the next generation of color measurement.

SUMMARY:FIRST Friday Episode #16: Stability First
DESCRIPTION:In flexography\, hitting the target once is not the same as controlling the process. \nBefore a printer can optimize\, fingerprint\, characterize or meaningfully improve a press condition\, the process needs to be stable enough to produce repeatable results. But achieving that stability requires more than watching color. Ink\, substrate\, anilox\, plates\, mounting materials\, impression\, tension\, drying and other variables all interact to influence what ultimately comes off the press. \nIn this FIRST Friday\, FTA’s Kenny Tucker and Chris Standifer will explore why stability is such an important foundation of the FIRST methodology and practical process control. Through a conversational discussion\, they’ll look at what a stable process really means\, how printers can recognize when a process is drifting\, why constantly adjusting the press can sometimes make problems worse\, and how measurement and documentation help separate normal process variation from problems that require action. \nThe goal isn’t perfection\, it’s creating a process you understand\, can repeat and can continually improve.
