FTA is sorry to announce the passing of Charles D. Miller, 83, who was chairman and chief executive officer of Avery Denison from 1977 to 1998. Miller was instrumental in transforming the company from a U.S.-based manufacturer into a global Fortune 500 leader in pressure-sensitive labeling materials and office products. Miller began his 47-year career with Avery Dennison in 1964. He served as CEO for 21 years, as chairman of the board for 17 years, and as a member of the board of directors for over 30 years.
He continued to serve the company as a director emeritus until his death. Including his business legacies, Miller will also be remembered for the indelible mark he left on the community. He was instrumental in the effort to bring the 1984 Olympic Games to Los Angeles, he served as chairman of the board of United Way of Greater Los Angeles, and he created scholarships, as well as offered generous endowments, to his alma mater, Johns Hopkins University.
